ARLES
NATURAL STATE.
800 BC the Ligurians arrive in Arles, in 123 AD the Romans arrive and 395 was the seat of the Gauls. It was not until 1883, after many emperors, bishops and kings had enjoyed their stay that Van Gogh arrived. He came to Arles en route to Marseille but never left, and his best friend Paul Gaugin came and joined him. They painted for a few months before the manic displays of artistic genius unearthed their demons. Van Gogh checked himself into the asylum in Saint-Remy. Arles is now still left to the artists, with a number of galleries, wonderful food and ruins to explore. The proper pace is a stroll, and the attitude is a beautiful melancholy as if nostalgic for something known only in a dream.
