AVIGNON
NATURAL STATE.
Avignon has a bountiful, savage and holy history. At first, as a continuous and major point of trade under Phoenician and Roman rule due to its position on the Rhone river. The city was then overtaken by barbarians, then Moors and Franks until the 1300’s when the French civilized the city. It was the Papal home during the 14th Century and has since reinvented itself as a cultural center supporting art, theater and music. Each year, in July, the city hosts The Avignon Festival, which brings people from around the world to experience performances and exhibitions in support of the arts. I went in October, with my father, and we explored the town and surrounding area. It is easily walkable, but sometimes difficult to drive as the city is totally walled in, use your GPS and it will to guide you through the access points. However, on foot, it is truly divine. Whether you are walking on water over the Pont d’Avignon or praying in the historical Palais des Papes, be sure and listen for le Mistral, the name of the wind that blows from southern France through the Gulf of Lion, as this is the most spiritual of all.
