GOTLAND
NATURAL STATE.
Imagine untouched nature on an island the size of Long Island, but with only 60,000 people inhabiting it. You land in Gotland, pick up a rental car and can drive around the island. There is no traffic, only farmlands, little towns and breathtaking beaches. It is, however, much colder than a summer in the Hamptons so prepare to be packed for brisk weather. This roughness lends to the authentic experience one can have in Gotland. It’s main town Visby, used to be a Viking settlement and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site as it was a Hanseatic village from the 12th century. It is also one of the best preserved medieval cities in all of Europe. We stayed at Fabriken Furillen, had farm-to-table dinners, gins and tonics with juniper berries and spent the days going to surrounding islands and towns or just simply driving the coastal roads, the wind in our hair.
